How to Throw a Kentucky Derby Party

The Kentucky Derby is so much more than a horse race - it’s a longstanding tradition with its own quirks and traditions! New Englanders might not know much about this race, but is that stopping you from throwing the most epic Derby party? It’s time to break out the Mint Juleps, big hats, and roses and throw your very own Derby extravaganza!

Last year, Emily’s mother and Quebrada Baking Co founder Kay, threw a great Kentucky Derby party and it inspired us to write about all the wonderful ways you can throw your own party, too. The race may be miles away, but who doesn’t love a good themed party?

The actual Kentucky Derby may last just a few fleeting minutes, but the entire event is a day-long opportunity to throw the perfect start-of-summer party! This year’s race will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2022, so it’s time to start planning! From Derby dress code to the perfect finger food, here are our top tips for hosting a memorable Kentucky Derby party.

Set the Scene with Derby Decorations

The Kentucky Derby is the ultimate theme party, so you’re going to want to go all-out! That means themed invitations (with a dress code!) and a lavish party space. Start with roses, an absolute must-have Derby decoration because the Derby is often called “The Run for the Roses.” The Derby winner receives more than 400 roses sewn into a blanket after the race… and that’s why roses are probably the most important decoration. Try a rose-themed centerpiece to set the vibe!

Dress to Impress

The Kentucky Derby is all about hats, pastel-colored dresses, and full suits. Guests will look to you to set the tone with the dress code, so be sure to dress to impress! We’re giving you permission to really go all-out: big hats, a full suit, a dramatic dress… The Derby is no time to pick out a modest outfit!

If this is your first Derby party, you might consider suggesting style guidelines for everyone so they understand the dress code. Kentucky Derby-themed dress code includes:

  • Bold hats

  • Festive fascinators

  • Bright colored or bold printed dresses

  • Colorful suits

  • Needlepoint belt

  • Derby pocket square

When everyone shows up, you can always have an anonymous Best Dressed contest!

Prep Signature Drinks

No Kentucky Derby party is complete without the event’s signature drink, Mint Julep. Mint Julep became the event’s official drink in 1938 and nowadays, more than 120,000 mint juleps are served during race weekend at Churchill Downs. The official mint julep recipe has bourbon, crushed ice, sugar, water, and fresh mint.

Looking to offer more than just a mint julep? We hear you! Not every guest will want to sip on mint juleps all day. Another alternative: taking things up a notch with some of MEM Tea’s Crimson Berry Tea (which you can purchase in our store!). These refreshing Hibiscus Margaritas are a delicious, tropical take on the classic margarita. Plus, the drink comes out with a beautiful pink hue! The best part? This drink is equally delicious when made alcohol-free, if you’re looking for a virgin cocktail for younger guests.

Plan the Perfect Spread

If you’re throwing a Kentucky Derby party, you’re going to need finger food. Southern classics like grits can be a doozy for guests to eat on the go, while socializing. We recommend heading a bit off the well-worn Kentucky Derby path and instead offering some tasty treats. Desserts may be one of THE best party food, after all. Try these, which you can pick up at your local Quebrada:

  • Petite scones with cream and jam, the perfect little treat to go at an afternoon gathering

  • Petite chocolate mousse cups (who doesn’t love chocolate?)

  • Petite cheesecakes, a universally beloved goodie

  • Fruit tarts, for finger food as colorful as your guests

  • Chocolate cream tarts (need we say more?)

  • Strawberry cake, for a standout centerpiece

Like we said…we’re here for you and all your Kentucky Derby party needs! Stop by your local Quebrada and pick up all the sweet treats your heart can handle.

Stream the Big Event

There’s only one more thing to do…Watch the big event! The Kentucky Derby itself only lasts a couple minutes, but there’s a full lineup beforehand. Many major networks run hours-long coverage streams to watch. You can stream the big event on NBC Sports, or check out this more extensive rundown to watch the event.
